It runs in our blood. The thinkers. The dreamers. I’ve seen that face before. My mother has it. I have it. My daughter has it. But today, like an esoteric heirloom, I caught my sons inheritance on film. A split second of deep deep thought that is deep in our dna. With the first sip of coffee came a wave of centuries of complicated considerations thought through at cafes. The poets and the painters wore that face. The expats & expellees that were predisposed to and fixated with “-isms” and “-sophy’s” knew that heartbeat moment of all the unknown. The urge to ponder is powerful through the powdered bean...and perhaps more so sitting in cafe’s. Mystics marveled over its dregs in dirty cups attempting to clear their minds. 

So to help it along, I lean in to my boy and said with gravity, “Take it all in because as a very wise man once said- You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him discover it in himself.” Then the caffeine kicks in, and through the crooked streets of Naples our sights are set straight, and we walk with playful purpose, dodging scooters singing “GALILEO (Galileo), GALILEO (Galileo)!” .
