The failed Mummy 2017 launch illustrates a great failure of franchising too soon.

Rotten Tomatoes gives Tom Cruise's The Mummy a 17%, certified rotten...rehashed movies seem to be the theme of 2017, with sequels or relaunches of classic series from Power Rangers to another Spider Man reboot. While Wonder Woman has seen generous acclaim, due much in part to Patty Jenkins, drawing in viewers to multi-length movie sagas seems to have become the norm rather than what was once the exception.

Universal's franchising of the Dark Universe has opened with a resounding flop, and it brings to question, when will viewers say "enough"?

The Dark Universe is already seeking to revive Frankenstein's Monster, the Invisible Man and a long list of other characters that no one seems to be asking for; Brendan Fraser may be getting a kick out of Tom Cruise's failed revival of The Mummy, but if the under performance is anything to go on, Universal's longterm financial investment in the Dark Universe may be at risk.
