Parents open up about Utah student killed by man she had dated

Jill and Matt MCluskey's daughter, Lauren, had broken up with Melvin Rowland after finding out he was a registered sex offender on parole.

Parents Of Slain University of Utah Student To Sue School

21 year old Lauren McCluskey was a student at the University of Utah when she was shot and killed on the campus in Salt Lake City on October 22, 2018. The attacker, Melvin Rowland, 37, whom she had dated for just a month.

Lauren was on the phone with her mother at the time of the confrontation. Allegedly, Rowland dragged Lauren to a car he had driven to campus, forced her in the backseat, and proceeded to shoot her multiple times. Rowland was later found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

Now, Matt and Jill McCluskey, who he’d a press conference in Salt Lake City on Thursday Morning, staid in a statement that was obtained exclusively by ABC News,
“Matt and I realized that the only way to improve campus safety is to file a lawsuit. This is a last resort to effect positive change.”

The University President also gave a statement to ABC News. Ruth Watkins said that they “share the McCluskey family's commitment to improving campus safety. We continue to address the recommendations identified by the independent review of the university's safety policies, procedures and resources, and we are making ongoing improvements designed to protect our students and our entire campus community.”

University officials have told ABC News in a statement that the community gives the loss and that the independent report conducted by the University “identified areas of deficiency in the university’s systems and processes and made 30 recommendations for ways to improve them. The university is acting immediately to correct the deficiencies identified in the report.”

University President said that school officials will respond to the lawsuit “through appropriate channels.”
