President Biden Signs Bill Making Juneteenth Federal Holiday. President Biden just made it official ... there's now a federal holiday marking a milestone in the abolishment of slavery in the United States. Biden put pen to paper Thursday, signing a landmark bill establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day. It's a huge deal, and not only because it's the first new federal holiday established since 1983 with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Juneteenth is the oldest celebration in America commemorating the end of slavery.
