Over-the-Counter 150mg/200mg Fluconazole (Diflucan)

This article gives a synopsis of Diflucan, discussing its most popular uses as well as detailing the adverse effects and precautions that every patient should keep in mind when taking the medication.

In what way does Diflucan work

Diflucan is a prescription drug used to treat the signs and symptoms of fungal infections. Diflucan is versatile since it can be given alone or in conjunction with other medications. There is a class of medications called antifungals from which Diflucan was developed.

Application of DIFLUCAN (fluconazole) is used for the following conditions:

Candidemia of the esophagus, throat, and/or mouth. Diflucan has been shown to be effective against a wide variety of Candida infections, including peritonitis, Candida urinary tract infections, and systemic Candida infections (e.g., disseminated candidiasis, candidemia, pneumonia, etc.)

Meningitis due to cryptococcus. Patients with AIDS with cryptococcal meningitis should speak with a specialist before receiving a prescription for Diflucan (fluconazole).

Patients undergoing a bone marrow transplant who also intend on receiving radiation treatment and/or cytotoxic chemotherapy may benefit from taking Diflucan to lessen the likelihood of developing candidiasis.

Oral Diflucan (suspension and pills) is recommended to be taken at the same daily dosage as intravenous therapy due to its quicker oral absorption. On day 2 of treatment, plasma concentrations should be nearing a steady state, hence a loading dosage taken twice daily is often recommended for the first treatment.

To treat infections other than vaginal candidiasis, the daily Diflucan dosage will vary based on the infecting organism and the patient's reaction to therapy. Active fungal infection must be treated until it is no longer detectable by laboratory testing or clinical criteria. Infection may return if the treatment duration is incorrect.
