Japan’s First Artificial Reef

Japan plans to build its first artificial reef in response to the increasing number of surfers.

Along the western prefecture of Wakayama, just south of Osaka, plans to make a reef out of natural stones built on top of sand will soon be implemented. It will take the shape of a boomerang, which will in turn produce waves up to six feet.

As edgy as it sounds, Japan’s new reef will not only be aimed toward experienced surfers but will be safe enough for beginners.

According to Koji Naka, a local tourism official, "There is a growing number of surfers in the local region as well as surrounding areas. We hope to attract surfer tourists and make it as famous as Shonan."

The Shonan is famous for its scenery and is one of the leading resort areas geared toward surfing, sail boating and other water sports.

Construction will begin late December 2007 or early January 2008.
