The Phoenix Mars Lander touched down successfully on the Red Planet Sunday and will now begin a three-month quest to search for possible signs of past and current life while gathering important information for scientists back on Earth.
Equipped with a drilling tool, the Phoenix Mars Lander will dig below the surface of the soil and into the permafrost in order to collect evidence. The area the Phoenix Mars Lander is located is said to be similar to northern Alaska or Greenland.
The landing of the Phoenix Mars Lander was described as picture perfect as it gently touched the surface before unfurling its solar panels that will provide it power over the next 90 days. Pictures of the landing as well as the moments that followed have been pasts back to Earth giving scientists their first real look at the northern region of Mars.
