Washington Governor Jay Inslee has released a statement saying the derailment of an Amtrak train this morning is an "ongoing emergency." Three fatalities have been reported by media outlets, but authorities have not confirmed that number. "Today’s tragic incident in Pierce County is a serious and ongoing emergency. Trudi and I are holding in our hearts everyone on board, and are praying for the many injured. They are our top priority, and I know first responders are doing everything to ensure everyone has the care they need," Inslee said.
At least 77 people have reportedly been hospitalized.
The train derailed this morning before 8 o'clock about 40 miles south of Seattle in Pierce County. Train cars are still hanging off an I-5 overpass. The Pierce County Sheriff's department said several vehicles traveling on I-5 were struck by the train cars. Several motorists were injured, but none were killed.
