Search Continues for Trapped Utah Miners, Evidence of Sounds Brings Hope
The search at for the six coal miners trapped in Utah’s Crandall Canyon Mine entered its eleventh day on Thursday but brought with it a new hope for recovering the men alive.
Rescuers discovered evidence that may suggest the miners had set up a ventilation curtain that would separate clean, breathable air from exhaust air. While an air sample taken from the mine earlier this week showed an breathable oxygen content of just 7 percent there is a chance that when the mine collapsed clean air could have been forced deeper into the mine where the men are presumed to be located.
In addition to the ventilation curtain rescuers also recorded noises coming from below that surface may indicate survivors. The recording of vibrations lasted roughly five minutes but was enough to renew hope for a rescue and not a recovery.
The recording of the noise was enough to make company officials change their location for a fourth hole to be drilled on Thursday.
