Utah Miners Still Trapped, Three More Dead
The search for the lost Utah miners just took another turn for the worse as a second cave-in Thursday killed three more workers and injured at least six others. This is the eleventh day of a search effort to find six workers who are trapped 1,500 feet below ground in Crandall Canyon in Utah. It is unknown whether the six workers are still alive.
All rescue workers have stopped excavating due to this cave-in. Thus far, the rescue workers have only reached 820 feet below ground in nine days. They still have another 1,200 feet to go in order to reach the six workers. Mine officials says that the conditions of the mine are treacherous and had to halt the excavation due to seismic activity.
According to officials, the mine had a "mountain bump", which meant the walls of rock shifted at a great force. It registered at 1.6 on the Richter scale. A mountain bump was the cause of the first cave-in.
