MLB Scores: David Wells Looks Good in Dodgers Blue, Beats Mets in L.A. Debut
Less than a month after the San Diego Padres asserted that David Wells was done as a major league pitcher the portly 44-year-old donned the Dodgers blue and earned a 6-2 victory in his Sunday debut against the New York Mets.
Wells moved to 6-8 on the season after allowing seven hits and two runs over five innings.
The lefty was fortunate to earn the win as the Dodgers offense came to life in the fifth inning to give him a 3-2 advantage before coming out of the game. It was Wells who started the fifth with a bunt single and he moved to second on a single from Rafael Furcal. With one out Wells came around to score on a single from Matt Kemp and Ramon Martinez followed with an RBI single to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead.
Los Angeles added another three runs in the sixth inning and the Dodgers bullpen shut down the high-powered Mets offense allowing just two hits and striking out five over the final four innings.
With the win the Dodgers pulled to within 3 ½ of the San Diego Padres for the wildcard.
