The NATO –led International Security Assistance Force confirmed Monday the deaths of two service members in Afghanistan. In a statement posted on their website, ISAF said the soldiers died Sunday when an improvised explosive device, commonly known as an IED, exploded in the eastern part of the country.
No other details on the attack were released. ISAF does not release the names and nationalities of dead service members; their policy is to “defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.”
Since the beginning of the year, at least 120 NATO service members have lost their lives in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, officials say four American soldiers are believed to be dead in last week’s helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan. The Black Hawk helicopter went down in bad weather on Thursday, April 19. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the crash the following day.
"Yesterday (Thursday) evening Taliban fighters shot down a helicopter and killed all its passengers in Khanashen Dewalak area near Garmsir, southern Helmand province," a Taliban spokesman told CNN.
The cause of the crash remains unclear and is under investigation.
