Around The World Adventurer Sarah Outen Rescued From Rough Waters Off Japan

Atlanta 6/9/2012 1:59:57 AM

A British adventurer attempting to travel the globe by rowing, kayaking and cycling was rescued from rough waters off the east coast of Japan on Friday afternoon by the country’s coast guard. Sara Outen became stranded about 500 hundred miles off Japan after her 23 foot boat Gulliver capsized several times in tropical storm Mawar. The cabin took on a small amount of water.

Outen Tweeted while she awaited rescue. "Trying hard2 smile and breathe calm keep getting interuptd by waves throwing us over,” she wrote.

A merchant ship in the area and a Japanese coast guard plane kept watch on her vessel until rescuers arrived. "Sarah is now making her way to back to Japan. We are awaiting final confirmation of details of Sarah's arrival in Japan and will let you know more once we have further information,” Outen’s support team London2London blogged Friday.

Outen was supposed to row to Canada. It is unclear if she will resume the journey after Gulliver is fixed. She is about 11,000 miles into her around-the-world trip. Outen started on April 1, 2011 in London and planned to finish in the fall of next year.

Meanwhile, British rower Charlie Martell is currently awaiting rescue off Japan. He became stranded after his boat was flipped in the storm. Rescuers are expected to reach Martell Saturday morning. Martell was rowing solo from Japan to San Francisco, California.
