The anticipation of the new Star Wars movie has been growing since the title was released. On Black Friday, theaters released the trailer for the first time for all Star Wars fans to see. There is one question though, why is there a black Storm Trooper? The question can be attributed to the fact that in “Episode II: Attack of the Clones” it’s stated that all Storm Troopers are clones of Jango Fett, who is white.
In the first couple seconds of the trailer, actor John Beyoga can be seen in a Storm Trooper outfit without a helmet and he has a startled, confused look on his face. Beyoga who is a new face to the Star Wars title is an African American male. When the trailer was seen, hardcore fans began to wonder why is a black male in a Storm Trooper outfit? If J.J. Abrams and Disney are sticking to the stories of past movies, facts aren’t adding up.
As more and more people began to see the trailer, a bit of controversy began to swirl around the upcoming title. Star Wars fans may be upset with the twist in the storyline in regards to the Storm Trooper back-story stated in “Episode II”. However, with the recent events that have taken place in Ferguson, MO, some have begun to debate the tension of race.
Social media started buzzing about the trailer. People were posting their comments and expressing their opinion on the new movie. There was on person who made a post on reddit.com that had another opinion of the black Storm Trooper, “Not even in a fictional universe are we allowed to exist to them.” Beyoga will not be the only African American actor as he will be alongside Lupita Nyong’o. Most fans have been very supportive of the cast on various social media sites. For the people that have a problem with the black Storm Trooper, Beyoga told them first hand “Get used to it.”
Another part of the swirling debate over who this black Storm Trooper is whether or not he is actually a Storm Trooper. Due to the look on his face in the trailer, could this man be on the good side and in a desperate attempt to avoid a disastrous situation put on a Storm Trooper outfit? Fans who are interested will have to wait until December 18th, 2015 when the title is released.
