The Zika virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes and is thought to cause microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome, has been declared a "public health emergency of international concern" by the World Health Organization. Zika has been reported in more than 20 countries and continues to spread.

Microcephaly is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which babies are born with underdeveloped brains and abnormally small heads. Guillain-Barre is caused by a severe bacterial or viral infection and can sometimes cause paralysis.
